Need a Spot
I have a 92 4wd pickup, just recently it has started making some noises on me. What it sounds like is when you let off the clutch youll hear a click or smack type sound. 3 out of 5 times when accelerating and running through the gears youll get a click click click loud and distinctive, however i cant pinpiont where its coming from. originally i thought clutch, but this morning just rolling down a small hill in neutral, i still heard it. anybody had the same problem, any ideas, any help would be appriciated. clutch is not slipping.

Roll Me Over
Since you were in neutral and still heard the noise, I would guess that it is either u-joints(more known for vibrations when going bad), or a wheel bearing, there isn't much else other than the engine turning when in neutral. I would find a slope long enough you could role down it with the engie of and see if you still hear the noise, this would eliminate the engine. I would also get one of your friends(or you could) to walk along side and see if they can hear where the noise is comming from.

You could also lift the one tire at a time and spin it and see if you hear anything.

More than tread lightly. Leave it like you were never there, nor anyone else.
