V8 power hasn't been very friendly to all the axle parts. Close to 400hp instead of original 109hp is obviously too much for Mitsu 8" axles, so now itÆs time for a axle swap.
For front I will have Toyota Land Cruiser HJ-61 solid axle with factory locker and Longfield half-shafts. Theoretically should be as strong as 35spline Dana60, but half of the weight (compared to D60).
For rear one option would be Montero SR rear axle with 9.5ö diff and 1.32ö half-shafts. Would it survive 400hp? What tire size have you guys used with SR axle and has anyone broke one?
à or should I go directly Chevy 14bolt for rear? It would definitely be as strong as needed, but I donÆt like the extra weight, width, low clearance and 8 lug bolt patternà

I was thinking about Volvo C303/TGB11 portals. Here in Baltics and Scandinavia a lot of offroaders are using them. They have factory lockers and rated close to D60. The limitation is speed - max speed is about 60mph, even less for long time highway use.

I had never heard that before. Why would there be a speed limitation? Stability, geometry?

I'd try an SR axle back there. It's not gonna cost NEAR as much compared to building a 60, or a 14 bolt for the rear.
Try getting a Locking axle from a montero sport like I have. SR size, but with leaf spring mounts. BOLT in for us leaf guys.

I had never heard that before. Why would there be a speed limitation? Stability, geometry? - hub gears and oil in there are getting extremey hot. One military mechanic told that a lot of the portal failures are caused by highway speeds.

Make sure you get the larger axle. There were the smaller 9in axles with lockers too.
I just want to tell you both good luck, and we're all counting on you.

i think a montero 9.5 is almost as strong as a dana 60 if not just as strong. it's a smaller axle but if you have gone over both axles the montero is built better. i had both in my garage for a while i did some comparing
