Getting the Wheeling Fever

does anyone have any suggestions about how I could offroad with an aftermarket intake without constantly cleaning my MAF so the check engine light doesnt stay on?
2003 Tacoma Prerunner V6 XtraCab:
Billet Grille, Injen Intake, Flowmaster 50 Series Exhaust, Tonneau Cover, Side Step Pipes, Skid Plate

Don't over-oil 'yer filter <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" /> I see you're in highland.. Highland, as in right below the San Bernardino Mtns.? I live up in Arrowhead <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> -Dano- <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />

Don't over-oil 'yer filter <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" /> That and buy a pre-filter for dusty / wet areas. Works better than most think. That on top of your wet filter will work great as has been my experience and opinion. Injen Pre-Filters

yea I go offroading there a lot. Theres a lot of nice trails up there. Do the pre-filters still require cleaning of the air filters after? I have the injen intake body, but the filter is a k&n. what do you think of their wraps? http://www.knfilters.com/wraps.htm

Well, about 5 billion people may come out of the wood works and tell you how a K&N filter is junk and they don't work, blah, blah, blah...
I have run K&N filters for a long time (20+ years) in AZ dirt and dust, never had a problem. I have also always run either the foam pre-filter or the micron mesh pre-filter with great success.
Yeah, you still need to clean the filters.

so if I get this filter, do I ever have to clean the MAF again? or will it get dirty eventually. sorry for the newb questions

If you over oil the filter, yes, you will have to spray down the MAF. All the years I ran a K&N on my old 4Runner, I rarely cleaned the MAF and then only as a part of maintenance.
Other than that, use the oil to just barely wet the filter and you will be fine. Just as a note, I always used the oil in the squeeze bottle instead of the spray and just used enough to lay a light bead across the top of each pleat and let the clean gauze soak up the rest.
