Need a Spot

Will a HEI distributor from a chevy 3.8L V6 work in a 4.3L V6? I found one in a '82 chevy monte carlo but not sure if it would work.I am building a '97 vortec with a carb setup and need a non-computer distributor w/vacume advance. Also I do have a V8 HEI unit. Can it be reworked internally for a V6? Different pickup or module? I dont have any experience with these units. So any help would be great.

The 3.8l distributor should work if it's long enough. The V8 one won't unless you replace the pole piece and the thingy that has 8 points on it instead of 6 (I can't remember what it's called right now <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" />)

you need to make sure you get a "standard" HEI, not one that has the ESC. (Electronic Spark Control) You need one that has vacuum AND mechanical advance ONLY. I'm not sure if you'll find one of those in a V6 though, I think they all had ESC. What you need to do is get a standard V8 HEI dist and replace the magnetic pickup with one from a V6 model. I am not 100% sure, but I think the standard V8 module will still work just as long as you use a V6 pickup.

It is my understanding that the V-6 and V-8 spark modules are the same part number.
