I may have a chance to pick a very clean 1990 Trooper XS, Manual Trans, Basic Basic Basic, with a V6 for a few hundred dollars <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> and was wondering what problems or concerns to look for?

The engine starts right away but is idling high and just failed a Ca smog check. O2 sensor? or ? It has 150k miles on it but seems to have at least one wheel bearing making noise.

Is this a Isuzu engine or Mitsu? What size would it be, seems that it is TBody injected or ?

Any insight would be great!

Thanks,

Actually, if it is a V6, it is a Chevy engine. It is the 2.8l, 60 degree engine.

The idle could be the O2 sensor, but more likely it is the IAC or a vacuum leak.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Did 88 - 91's come with V6 and 5 speeds? I thought all of these years with 5 speed's were Isuzu 4 cyl.

Body Damage is Cool
'89 thru '91 for Troops with the GM 2.8 V6, available either with MUA 5-speed or GM 4L30E auto trans.

BTW another possible reason for failing smog is a worn-out cat. Get a cheap Catco replacement in a larger diameter (2" or 2-1/4"), upgrade the exhaust to the same dia, and it'll run a lot better besides burning cleaner.

O2 sensors are cheap; standard GM one-wire sensor available just about anywhere. Try an eBay search for Deals Galore........ed

P.S. a Must Read for GM V6 owners: http://www.4x4wire.com/tech/60degreeV6/

if it's idling high and failing smog, the very first thing to look for is vacuum leaks..

the MAP sensor can't regulate fuel correctly if there are vacuum leaks, plain and simple.

Thanks for all the advice! I was all ready to put it to good use, but... I got out bid on it here at the dealership. it was trade in and I was pretty interested in it at the estimated $800~$1000, as a toy, but it went for almost $2000, which is over wholesale KBB. Now there is a 95 here that I have my eye on.
