Getting the Wheeling Fever
Ok I went to check the tranny fluid on 1989 isuzu trooper pulled the fill plug on the right side. I got it out and put my finger in to check the oil and when I pulled my finger out the threds on the side of the tranny are coming out. so I put the bolt back in and it will get tight and when i got to snug it up it will become lose. what do i do or can anything be done? thanks

Your best bet is to go find an appropriately sized rubber expansion plug.

Heli-coil makes inserts that size, or they will if you order enough of them, but getting it done in the vehicle is probably nigh to impossible.

I've had the drain/fill plugs inserted on the x-case, but that was because the cover comes off. It did require a machine shop to do the work, though.

Good Luck,
Michael

I have the same problem on my 1997 Trooper. Bad design with steel-threaded plug in aluminum-threaded case. Particularly when dealership workshops don't treat them with due care.

Because it's only the filler plug, I used a liquid thread repair to create a substitute thread. When inserting the plug I apply silicone gasket seal on the plug thread and then finger-tighten it. This has worked OK for several years now.

I have also read a suggestion of using teflon plumbing-thread tape (it is a fine, white, non-adhesive tape here in Oz).

It is the same here in the States, but it is wound the other direction on the roll.

That's because your taps (sorry, faucets) turn in the opposite direction and the water falls upwards!

You'll note that I allowed for cultural differences when I said "aluminum-threaded" rather than "aluminium-threaded"!

Ok what me and my Dad did was get some silicone around the head of the bolt and put it back on. It's working great.

I'm pretty close to the equator right now in Manila -- the threads are actually a slip fit here. :p

We're practically neighbours (neighbors?) at the moment then!

Water from your taps would be flowing horizontally.

What a silly discussion! - still, you've got to laugh sometimes don't you.
