I have been reading lately about hard wiring a switch into the cab of my tj to run a winch without a remote. (http://www.4x4wire.com/tech/winch/remote/) but the only directions or schematics that I can find are for the three lead remote systems, and my warn m8000 has 5. I tried setitng it up the way shown for the three way, but no luck...remote still works, but the switch does nothing. I tried contacting warn but predictably they would not offer advice for altering their product. Does anyone know what the two extra wires do and how to run them so my switch will work?

I would ohm the plug while changing the switch to see how many wires had connection with each position of the switch..
Then I'd wire my toggles accordingly and see what happens..

When I did it to mine, I used the wires that came on the remote and marked where the wires were connected to the switch. The wires coming off the plug inside the winch are the same color, so I just connected the wires to them. Blue to blue, green to green, etc. I want to say the white one was the power wire, so I put a switch in line with it so I won't activate the winch by accidentally bumping it. I made a thread about it that talked about what wires did what.

Hope you can get it to work!

Hey, thanks KC. I just pulled my remote apart, and the switch has six connections, black, white, red, green, and brown...then brown is again attached across to the sixth. I can trace the wires back to the solenoids easily enough, but the switch that I was trying to use only has three connections, and was much cheaper than buying another remote. Does anyone know how I can translate a 6 plug on-off-on switch into a 3 plug?

In the old days Jeeps had inside switches and a cable to put her in gear and out of gear.
Could I suggest using more than one switch?

I bet you could use more than one switch. But I would ask the question why? Sounds like you have a SPDT switch when you need a DPDT switch. I don't know if you can convert it to 3 wire, but I doubt it. I imagine the winch companies switched to 5 wire for a reason. If you don't want to cannibilize your remote, you could probably find a switch that would work locally or order it online. I found one at the local hardware store, most electrical supplies would probably have them. Radio Shack might have one but I'd go with metal toggle over plastic only because of durability. Bouncing around holding a thin piece of plastic is asking for it to break.

The cable idea for the clutch is awesome. I'm gonna see what I can come up with for mine.
