ok well i went to check the heat the other day to make sure it worked. and well it does not blow hot air. and it bairly blows air at all, i can clearly hear the fan pick up speed as i change the setting up higher.

now i don't even think it is changing vent position eather.

this is not going to be good for winter..haha

well if you can tell me any thing i can test or what/where to look to find the problem?

oh and thanks in advance for the help.

with out this forum i would be lost fixing this up before winter.

matt

What's the temp gauge doing for starters? Don't ferget meester t'stat!

Yotas have what's called a blower resistor that lives in the proximity of the blower fan that goes out; pretty common on older rigs for them to die.

Figure out the heat problem first, then verify if you have a vent issue (usually mechanical).

If you can hear the fan motor changing speeds i'd guess the resistor is good. It's got to be blowing out somewhere so check all vents for air movement (dash, floor and defrost). On my 87, I had to reattach the selector cable housing (the whole cable was moving when I moved the vent selector lever) but I did still feel the air coming out between the dash and floor vents. Maybe the squirrel cage fan fell off the motor if you're not getting any air movement. As for the heat, feel the heater hoses going into the firewall for the heater core, both should be warm/hot to the touch if the coolant is circulating properly. If there is a blockage one hose should be a lot cooler then the other.

The heater water valve is accessible from the driver's footwell, with a one phillips screw retained cover. Make sure it's opening. One of the control wires accessed there, too.

The truck heats up fine, Then stays about an 1/8th the way up on the guage. The only time it will move up from there is if i'm in a drive through for a long long time. it will creep up a tiny bit then go back when i leave.

ok i will check the hoses today. and see if i can feel a temp difference. also i will check the vents for them just not working or w/e.

the heater water valve is that what turns the heat on or off (open or shuts the valve)?

thanks for the replies

yes

I think you have a thermostat problem. The engine is not getting hot enough. Pull a spark plug and look for dark sooty deposits. How is your mpg?

Your t-stat is not opening, unless your temp gauge or temp sensor is faulty... much much more likely that it's the t-stat though. That explains the lack of heat, but you said it is barely blowing any air at all even though you can hear the fan? T-stat wouldn't affect this, so you have two seemingly independent issues here. At least it sounds like both will be relatively easy and cheap to fix. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

well i found out why i have no heat...

the little linkege that connects the lever at the console to the heater hose, broke.

so i can just move it by hand for now. i will need to rig up a new linkege so it will work properly again.
