Does the gas gauge work? Sounds like that's what's bad ... or coming up with that code. Generally, fuel pumps are either good or bad, as in either they work or don't. There's not much in between with them.

well they say it has jumped around on gauge a couple times and it does not go down when you turn off key.

Not sure on that particular model, but not all fuel gauges are zero return gauges. Some stay where the level was last indicated when the key was on.

Body Damage is Cool
Common issue with our model. I had my fuel tank sending unit replaced under warranty at about 75K. There are lots of discussions of this on past threads. It was annoying not knowing how much fuel was in my tank, but mostly it showed empty when there was still a half tank remaining. The actual fuel pump is probably OK, but generally the pump and sending unit are replaced as an assembly. Do a search and read on whether you can replace the sending unit only on a '01. It is covered under the powertrain warranty if your warranty still applies.
