I'm seriously considering putting a Chevrolet 350 V-8 in my 1990 Toyota 4Runner 4x4. My question is how hard will it be to pass inspection (emissions) with it every year. I live in Houston, TX which is in Harris County but I have the option of registering it in Trinity County where the emissions aren't as strict but who know's if they will be in the future. I really want to do this swap but this is really the only thing holding me back.

Generally speaking, the engine has to come from the same model year or newer. You also have to have all the emissions equipment in place that came with the NEW engine. That means for guys who swap 3.4 into a truck with a 3.0 you'd have to have all 4 catalytic converters, not just the 2 the 3.0 had. You asked if a 350 is legal, yes, and I think you should put all the emissions stuff in. I hate sitting behind a vehicle in a traffic jam or drive thru that is just spewing all that nasty exhaust. Not to mention my kids have asthma as it is.

So does this mean that I would have to run a 1990 or newer v-8? In 1990 the Chevrolet V-8's were fuel injected and had all the sensors and what not tied into the vehicles computer system. Are you telling me that I would have to have fuel injection and all of the sensors and computers in order to pass? I wanted to keep it simple with a carberated motor.

Thats how it is in California. Not sure about Texas. I'd do some searching on the DMV site.
