So, you're talking Ford 9" rear and Dana 44 high pinion front? I'm sure it's been done. Do you know the wms-wms dimensions of them?

DUDE! He asked how wide they are compared to yours.. I'm thinking the older ones are narrower. Also do you have an idea about who will do the welding and spring setup? And the driveshafts?

EB had a low pinion front 44.

The eb axles are 57" wide, the oe TJ axles are 60.5" wide.

Sure, great idea. NOT.

This is not an upgrade, the width alone will make this a bad idea. Next...the rear 9" was only a 31 spline big bearing 9 the last two years of the eb. 76'-77' all the rest were 28 spline junk with housings not worth the scrap value.

I would never say it can't be done, any idiot can weld and any trained monkey can operate a wrench, but only a trained idiot monkey should try this one.

I have done this swap: 8.8 explorer rear and used a dana 44 axle out of a wagoneer. I took the old style knuckles on the ends of the axle off. Then removed the ends off the d30 and with a little boring, welded them on the waggy 44. I then used the d30 outer stub/knuckle, etc. 2 detroits and 2 5.38 ring and pinions and I drove past everyone.

Sand, if anyone was thinking that swapping axles out of a TJ in favor of something better was a "bad idea", that was a huge missunderstanding on your part. I've been swapping axles out of TJs for better axles for the last 8 years as well as axle/engine and tranny swaps in jeeps for the last 18 years.

The swap you did is an ok swap, the EB axles this fellow wants to use are a bad swap no matter how it is done.

By the way, you said you used the old D30 inner and outer knuckles? Why, that swap is putting weak ass parts on in favor of d44 proven knuckles that allow the ability of strong internal lock out hubs and 19 spline beefy stub shafts. all to keep 5 on 4.5 wheel pattern. ICK.

If money was no object, then go for new wheels, axles and all. Often times people want to build a rig in implemental steps. this would allow this person to keep their current wheels/bolt pattern. The older d44 knuckles do not allow for the smaller 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern. Now My jeep has 2 currie hp 9 inch and runs 37 hummmer mtr and hasn't broken...yet. That was just the old in your garage upgrade that will be durable enough for 95% of all trails.

I guess you didnt read or misunderstood my statement. That particular jeep was sold to a friend of mine 3 years ago and he has flogged those axles with a tpi 350 and 35's, so I guess its not that weak.
