Hey guys, New to the forum, long-time lurker. Just got a '91 V6 with an automatic 4x4. I don't know what the previous owner did to the AT shifter assembly, but its loose as hell, and seems to be probably missing some stuff that holds it together tightly.
I found a guy locally parting out his AT Floor shifter w/4x4 out of his 4Runner, and wanted to know HOW to take mine apart, and his apart to swap them? Is it something easy I should just dive into, or are there some tricks?
Thanks, Seth

At the top of this page is a link for a 93 FSM (Factory Service Manual). The 91 and 93 are almost identical.

Yeah, I looked through that. The only transmission related information seemed to be about the actual transmission.
It's quite possible I didn't dig around enough in the '93 FSM, but after looking at a few of the guides for different Auto Transmissions, it didn't seem to indicate anything about the actual shifter assemblies.

I have the same problem on my '89 w/ AT... and the good ol' paper Toyota FSM dosn't have any info on it either. I'd love to have a solution though. I tried taking it apart once - best I could tell, there are bushings at the base of thr shiufter that are shot (wallowed out). But I couldn't figure out how to get them out w/o dropping the whole unit. Grrrr.

Well, glad to hear I'm not alone. Started to think I was retarded for not finding the answer in the all-mighty FSM.
I can't even really find any parts for that shifter unit on Ebay or any sites either. Kinda odd. There must be way more Manual's out there than Auto's.
I guess this might be something that you have to take the dealer-price hit on.

Go to the dealer and ask them to print out the parts breakdown page for you, so you can figure out what you need. I've had to ask a couple of times for stuff; printed out for me, no prob--- free.

You are probably missing two plastic bushings that the shifter pivots in. The shifter is PAIN to disassemble and reassemble. The plastic handle with the buttons has to come off to takle the cover off. The wires are tricky, and the little sliding dust covers are delicate. I ended up breaking them and replacing them too.
Had the same problem when i got mine

Where did you end up getting the bushings and other parts from?

I made mine from bronze at home on my lathe, but you can buy the factory bushings at the dealership.
