I just got an 86 22re truck.it has 160k and a noise. It rattles like a diesle when I first give it gas ,when I shift gears, when it first starts. I can barely give it gas and it will make the noise continuiosly, but it quits if you give it more gas.I adjusted the valves and checked the timing chain. Guides are still there so Im not sure if it is the chain rattling or not.truck still runs ok,but seems a little short on power. Is there anything else I should check.

Uh oh...
Connecting rod bearings......?

If you pull the oil pan, and can wiggle the connection rods a little up and down, that'll do it.

Or, if your lucky... An exhaust leak.

Could be detonation too, does it sound kinda like a can of marbles being shaken around? Have you messed with the AFM at all? My AFM spring got worn out on my old motor and was letting the flapper open to easily at low throttle creating a lean condition. Improper timing could be the culprit as well. Might also want to check your fuel system.

Definitely hit it with a timing light, improper timing can lead to what you describe and engine damage if you let it go on too long. Look at the top of the AFM, if the silicone seal is cut it's probably been jacked with at which point you should look for a junkyard replacement if setting the timing correctly doesn't fix the problem.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
If the it makes the niose right when you push in the clutch to shift gears, I would say rod bearings also, usually a good sign of it.

well I think I found the problem.Looks like somebody changed the guides and left the old chain on .guides look new ,but the cover has been cut by a chain at some time.Lot of slack in the chain.also looks like a water pump scored the cover at some time.Cant figure it out, chain was 1/8" longer than a new one but guides were fine.hope thats all it is ,Ill know when I get it back together.Think Ill take the time to drop the pan and look for junk in there. Is it possible to check the pan without dropping the front axle. All I can say is "why" would they do this? Now there is no doubt in my mind what a chain rattle is.

got the chain ,replaced, that cleared up some rattle but still got a little noise.Higher grade of fuel and seafoam helped some .still not right.when I jump the timing plug out nothing happens.shouldnt something change when I jump it out?if I set timing to 5 btdc it has NO power advance it to 12btdc it feels much better.but still making a little noise.engine had major sludge.think Ill flush it out with some diesle fuel tomorrow. The noise is present at acceleration only .anybody have any thought on this?I think Ill go read my fsm

Base timing unaffected by timing jumper is indicative of a poorly adjusted or malfunctioning TPS:
