Body Damage is Cool
Refueling.
I looked into it myself. There's one refueling station in my state. That's not exactly convenient. Yes, my cars tank could be refilled by just about any facility that can recharge grill tanks. But they can't/won't/don't charge the road tax, so they can't do it legally. They also can't get my vehicle up on their scales for weight.

Emissions.
Propane fueled vehicles are *not* exempted from emissions inspections like CNG vehicles are. So you technically have to have all your emissions stuff still hooked up. This creates all kinds of conflicts and pointlessness. If you just keep a low profile, you'll pass the sniff test with flying colors. But if you push the issue, you create tremendous headaches for yourself.

Inability to refuel was the reason I abandoned the project.

When I ran propane in an old Landcruiser, I invested in a propane motor fuel directory, at the time there was a western and eastern US volume. There are usually quite a few stations (or there were at that time - late '80s, early '90s), but the tricky part is most were 8-5 M-F type of places. So for weekend trips, you had to plan things out. I ran 50 gallons of tanks, so could go ~500 miles between fillups. My dad has run his '72 Chevy pickup on propane since '74 and he runs a 100 gal. tank and had never had problems finding fuel, even on cross-country trips. Back east one time he did have some issues with certain tunnels he could not use. BTW, that truck still has the original engine and aside from one broken timing chain, it is all original w/ maybe 700K miles on it by now (that is the biggest benefit of LPG, it burns very clean).

Smog restritions is what ended up causing me to get rid of my propane powered vehicle in CA. They dropped the LPG exemption back in the early '90s (only diesel and electric are exempt now) and made it nearly impossible to get a non-factory equipped vehicle smogged, that I gave up and sold it out of state. Funny thing is that LPG burns much cleaner than gasoline, so passing the sniffer test was easy, the visual is where I failed.

I wasn't aware they had propane powered vehicles back in the mid seventies. I thought came out in the mid eighties. The things you learn hey.

Down here in OZ a vast majority of servos have LPG on tap. At the moment it runs at less than half the price of unleaded fuel. It does burn very clean, I've recently had the head of my ford fairlane thats on dedicated propane. After just over 450k KMS the pistons and cylinders look like new. Only problem is upper cylinder lubrication.

Some people swear on propane, some swear at it... just personal experience i guess.

I know the driveability on my old carbed Landcruiser (F engine) was a million times better on propane. With the carb, I had to warm that thing up driving back streets before I could think of trying to get on an express road or freeway. It used to kick and sputter if you got on the gas too hard. With propane, it was super smooth hot or cold and angle won't matter. Also, the engine ran very smooth, I could literally adjust the idle speed clear down to 0 RPM. I think I set it to idle around 400 to keep some oil pressure, but it would idle at 100 or below with no issues.

I had mine done at a propane distributor shop, they did a full turn key install using Impco parts. It ran about $1500 w/ the 20+30 gallon tanks.

Seems like the GotPropane kit is one that is all ready to bolt-on for the 22R, so probably the best bet.

John Deere made propane powered tractors in the 50's.
