Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hi, I just made the decision to sell my 2002 Discovery 2 and go back to the old reliable monteros I used to own and drive. I'm looking for some updated info on the gen 2 version and would appreciate some advise.
1) when did the gen 2 change to the obd II engine management system and what did it do to my ability to fix it in my drivway? 2) I haven't paid much attention to monteros for 5 years and I don't know whats good and bad from Mitsu.
Any thoughts on this.
Thanks, I'm glad to be back

The more opitional and powerful Monteros started in 94 and on. I like the Gen II and II.5 Monteros all the way til 2000. After that the Gen III started. I dont mind the driving the Gen III, just prefer the earlier models. I would stick with an SR if you get it between 94-97, but in 97, they changed the motors (supposibly better) then from 98- 2000, they kept that same motor, but changed some of the appearence some (which we call the Gen II.5) I'd say go for the Gen II.5, cause if you are going to upgrade it, you are going to change the gears out anyways, but some still love the 94SR- 97SR. Both have pros and cons, but I would def stick between a 94- 2000, under 100K on the clock if you can find it would be awesome too, better under 70k so you can have the extra insurance of knowing the major service can be done, after 80k, its hard to know if the pervious owner did the service or not, ya know?

I'm sure others will chime in, you made a good choice, I love Discos (my sis has one) but there are lil problems here and there, so do Monteros, but they are so much easier to work on. Oh, and her back door hinge broke last week! The Montero hinges are so much beefier, almost twice the size!

OBD II was introduced across the board in 96. It gives you a little better insight into the goings on of the vehicle, although that is an arguable subject. Basically, more sensors to monitor stuff = more $$$$ when they take a poop.
Good luck and welcome back

Fasteddy's advice is occasionally sound...

Thanks for all your comments, I probably will go 95 or earlier so I don't have to deal with the OBDII issues. I actually do computer for a living but want something that is simple and very robust. I believe less sensors means less trouble with sensors. My 91 gen1 has 200,000 and it still travels 220miles to Empire La. every sunday. Almost trouble free.
Thanks
