A friend just had a detroit locker installed in the rear of his wifes TJ and discovered a couple of things about it while coming home on the highway. Its a 4 cyl and he tows a small military trailer. Anyway while shifting from 4th to 5th the locker jerked the jeep to the side and it took an effort on his part with the steering wheel to keep it straight. He said it also happened when he let off or stepped on the gas in 5th. Is this normal? Can a detroit be set up a bit looser to counteract this tendency?

Green a locker should never have a problem like that unless it is in a turn.. was the Jeep turning when these things happened? If not then I'd be looking elsewhere for a problem. I can see a heavy tongue load and a hard surface causing a problem while on a hard surface and in a tight turn. Big Jim <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/pfft.gif" alt="" />

It was in a straight line on the highway and the tongue weight might have been responsible plus someone asked him to check his tire pressures to make sure they were the same on each back wheel. Hes going to try a few things tomorrow.

That is pretty normal behavior for the detroit in s short wheel base rig. Wait until he is driving it in the rain. I have had my rig do lane changes as the locker engages then dis-engages when I let up off the gas then accelerate. Just rememeber the locker engages when power is applied and dis-engages when you let up off the gas. Once you understand that then you can modify the way you drive. You get used to it.

It is not quite as simple as disengage on decell and engage on accel, but it can seem that way. NO there is nothing to do to a DL to loosen it up. Tire pressures being off can amp up the problem, but towing a trailer with a detroit in a tj is asking for problems exactly like what you have ...go ARB.
