Need a Spot
I started up my 00 4Runner this morning and the check engine light came on. I just had the vehicle in about 2 months ago for timing belt and other belt changes. They also replaced the battery and did an oil change. About a month prior to that I had the trans flushed. It has 134K and I have had the vehicle for 100K of those miles and the check engine light has never come on. I called the dealership and the lady told me it was the 5K maintenance. I explained to her that I haven't gone 5K since it was in 2 months ago and that this light have never gone on when it needed a 5k maintenance (oil, filter, fuilds). I am wondering if this has to do with the codes being reset during the battery change or if it's the emissions like I've been reading online??

I have noticed a sandy, grinding kind of wispy noise when I excellerate but it does not do it all the time. It has gotten louder...which is a little alarming. It seems to vary when it occurs and if it happens it does it within the first 10 minutes of driving the car. I am wondering if this is causing the check engine light to come on.

I also read on here that the O2 sensor could need replacing. I did not change it at 75K and I have noticed a decline in gas milage but only slight decline. I get about 250 miles on a 15 gallon tank...what can be expected when you do over 75mph...lol

Any ideas?

Go get the codes read. Autozone or some other box stores out there will let you use their OBDII reader to pull codes for free. FSM's for this vehicle are posted in the Taco section here.

Someone is blowin' smoke; my 99 didn't toss a CEL for a 5K checkup, but did toss a code for a #2 misfire; had original plugs in it.

Your CEL does not indicate the maintenance schedule. Something faulty is triggering the CEL. Mine lit up at about 112,000 miles and it turned out to be the TPS and the rear O2 sensor. I replaced the TPS, both O2 sensors, and plugs.

I just learned about the free use of the diagnostic tool at an auto parts store... best thing ever seeing the dealers want $100 and an hour to do it. It took me about 4 minutes!
