My old 2.8 is givin me hell. Sigh. Yeah, it's got 280,000km on it but still... I was doin fine till now!

So, here's the deal...I'm not mechanically inclined. Nor am I wealthy enuff to just pay anyone, but I am particular enough that I want it done right the first time by a knowledgeable person...especially if I have to drive home to those that don't seem to know Isuzu Troopers from their <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/butwiggle.gif" alt="" /> !!

Who do I go to? I have not been on the Wire in a while, and I remember a few of you had done the conversion to a few different rigs... So, can anyone point me at "the guy"?

My compression is low on one cylinder and they think it's the head leaking...

I am in Southern Illinois...who do i go to and do you think I can risk the trip there?? smile

TYI

Talk to ya'll in the mornin.

Hey Dana,

I think the swap you're looking for is for a 3.4 to replace your 2.8. That is nearly bolt in, has been done several times, and there is plenty of how-to floating around here on it.

Swapping to a 4.3 is a whole different creature, specifically because it involves two different bolt patterns between engine and transmission. That is a lot more work, hasn't been done as often (I honestly don't remember if anyone's ever done it for a Trooper), and is probably stretching the skills of a non-mechanical individual pretty thin.

Check the 3.4 swap, and I'm sure you'll find a lot more information that will get you where you want to go.

James

Isn't Stinkbug a 4.3L? Not sure...but yeah the 3.4L is a much easier swap by all accounts.

Yes, but the 4.3 replaced a 2.6 and a 700R4 went in with it.

I put a 4.3 in my Trooper from a 2.6 and I also used the 4l60 Trans that came with the 4.3. You need a np208 or np241 transfer case out of a pre 1988 truck or 1991 blazer/suburban. It is not super hard but I would not attempt it unless you have some skills.

I could do the swap for you but I'm in Oklahoma and I see logistics problems there:D.

From what I have researched, if you do a 3.4 swap, almost any auto mechanic that installs engines is capable of doing the swap. The reason I say that is because GM no longer makes the 2.8's and they sell a "direct replacement" 3.4 This constitutes a equal swap if a dealer will do such an install.

The 3.4 will give you much needed power but it doesn't come close to matching the torque of the 4.3. If you just need it for a DD then I'd go with the 3.4.

Man..see? I really was tired! LOL

Ok...what I MEANT was the 3.4. YES, i'd love the 4.3. Abso-friggin-lutely. But...ahem...what'd be the price difference?

Mine is a daily driver. But I do recreational offroading and I have it mainly for Search And Rescue and other disaster situations...can't beat the clearance and flex when climbing over telephone poles and trees and debris after a tornado!

So. OK? That's not bad. I have family in KC and friends in NC. OK would be just fine. IM me or email me.
