Need a Spot
Greetings folks!

I am in a pickle, and hope an experienced Toyo mechanic can shed some light on my problem.

VEHICLE: 1986 Toy 4runner, 22re. This 4RunnerÆs 22re mill, may not be original....not sure, this engine, has 2 valve cover mounted, energized, VSVÆs (ala 1988?).

Barely runs, without getting the revs up, and stutters fairly badly when at revs, with or without load.

Had it in a shop, where I expect they know even less than I. They did manage to change the plugs, and charge me $85 for it, even though I had already done the plugs.

What I know:

Basic Ignition parts, all brought to new. Cap, rotor, plugs and wires, all new.
EGR works great.... applied vacuum to EGR causes stall, so valve works fine.

Found bad vacume hose, that runs from the rear Energized VSV, down to a diaphragm shaped valve at the rear, which is near, or connected to, the fuel rail (has a larger clip held rubber hose on the bottom of disk shaped valve).
Replaced a few marginal vacume hoses...... yes, they were all routed to the right place.

No change.

HereÆs the weird part.... had the Air Flow Sensor off briefly, just to make sure there were no bird nests inside it. Put it back together, got in and started it up, and it ran GREAT.... for about 1 to 2 seconds. Started it 3 or 4 times. Same thing. The engine just leaped to life, and ran spot on... for 1 to 2 seconds, and then died.

Sure enough, I had left the wire harness unplugged from the Air Flow Sensor.
Plugged it back in, UREKA! It started up, and ran like crap, just like before.

Can anybody shed light on this?

Seems like the AFS is causing the problem, or at least what ever the data coming from it, is causing the problem.

I was under the impression, that the air flow sensor either works or doesnÆt work. I presume, that the fuel pump will NOT run, when that harness is unplugged from the AFS.

Thought I had it licked for a few moments there. I am almost tempted to try and jump the contacts on the AFS harness, that energize the fuel pump, and see if this puppy will run.

It already seems to be sucking a TON of fuel, running as bad as it does.

Thoughts? Anybody?

Did you check your Throttle position sensor, (TPS) although it sounds like a bad AFM. If the TPS is bad, you cant set your timing, and it sounds like your timing is off, but since it ran OK with the AFM disconnected, even for a second I would guess that is it. Maybe you can try to swap it with another to check it out?

I had some really rough idle and replaced all of my seemingly good vacuum hoses, and that made a big difference.

I am sure there are ohm meter tests for the AFM same as the TPS, check the FSM

Make sure the fuel pressure regulator is getting good vacuum:

AFM controls the fuel pump:

Unless you install the fuel pump test jumper:

Welcome to the board! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

1. make sure there are no leaks from the AFM to the Throttle Body. the plastic tube is prone to cracking after 20+ years...

2. any codes? they can be pulled by following the procedure here
its the smaller of the 2 in the picture... and only has 2 wires. incidentally, this is the same connector that must be jumpered when checking the timing.

3. TPS adjusted properly? procedure can be found here

Factory Service Manuals are stickied above.
