Need a Spot
I have just bought a 1977 jeep with a 3 speed. I hear a rattling noise, but only under the following circumstances: The clutch is depressed while the vehicle is in gear and coasting. Any other time, there is no funny noise. No noise while accelerating, decelerating, or in neutral, or with the clutch out. No noise when the vehicle is not moving.
Any advice would be most appreciated.

Thanx,
Dave

New info. No noise in 4wd neutral regardless of clutch position. I get noise while coasting, clutch in in all gears. Ya think it is the transfer case?

About 99% of noises come from either the u-joints or the throw out bearing at the clutch. Seems you have ruled out the throwout bearing.. So now you MUST eleminate the u-joints before even considering the tranny or transfer case.

I don't think is is the u joints for the following reasons: 1. I removed the front driveshaft no change.
2. the rear u-joints and drive shaft seem solid, no movement with the exception of some wiggle in the yoke that joins the transfer case to the rear driveshaft. the wiggle is forward of the u-joint.
3. the noise goes away when i put the jeep in neutral with clutch in, but i have it in gear with the clutch in. the u-joints would not be changed by this fact.
what do you think?
thanx

I think that is bout as far as anyone not at the scene can go with advice.. Someone that is there listening and feeling will have to diagnose your noise.
