Getting the Wheeling Fever
OK, so the "Check Gas Cap" light comes on, and sure enough, the fuel attendant (I live in OR, so we can't do it ourselves, only a certified "expert" is allowed the privilege) did not screw the cap on tight enough. I tightened it and consulted the owners manual, and it says the light should go off after "several" driving cycles. Anybody know how many several is? It's been more than two weeks now, and the light is still shining bright.

A driving cycle is a prescribed number of miles.. I'm thinking 20 or more at hiway speeds.. If you are sure the cap was loose just drive it.. Eventually the light will dissapear.

Hate to ask the stupid question, are you sure the cap is tight and the gasket is good? The light doesn't measure position of the cap, its either a pressure or vacuum sensor. So there is the off chance if its been on that long, you could still have a problem.

That is what I'm afraid of. I guess I'll have to brave the Jeep Service Department (I hate those guys) and have them check it out. Still under warrenty, so it's just the inconvenience of it all.

Does the 04 models have self diagnostic test by turning the the ignition 3 times like on the 97's and some other years?

Would that trigger code read of potential issue regarding a Check Gas Cap light?
I know it works wonders with the Check ENgine light.

It may be worth a shot. The Dealerships will charge at least 90 just to hook it up.

It doesn't work with 04's Try your local autoparts store Brad, they should scan your truck and turn your check engine light off for you for free.
A drive cycle is more than just driving twenty miles on the freeway. Its a OEM prescribed number of starts, stops, hard and light accelerations and cruising. Depending on how you drive it could take days or weeks, but the computer is looking for these certain prescriptions to occur before it considers itself in a drive cycle. Only then will it perform the self diagnostic of the fuel tank and cap seal and turn off the light.

Thanks. I stopped by the local Jiffy Lube here and they erassed the code for me. If it shows up again, I'll take it to the dealer here. Our local Jeep Dealer's Service Department leaves much to be desired and I continue to look for a decent shop locally.

I agree, the dealer here in SE WI is at best comprable to a 70 filling station....
