Getting the Wheeling Fever
Gotta strange one 4 you guys. When my truck is warmed up or I think when the exhaust gets hot I get a smell comming from the truck that I can smell in the cab, it smells exactly like burnt marshmellows: u know like campfire cooked ones. what in the world could cause this distinct smell. I've smelled this the last 5 times I went wheelin

How's your coolant holding up? It's got kind of a sweet smell to it.

You're not actually cooking marshmallows on the exhaust, are you?

How clean is the truck? Been through any mud or watter holes lately?
I've found that mine has a very distinct smell when the headers get nice and hot... when it's dirty from being in mud or water. It's literally the dirt/mud baking on it.

Next guess would be, as mentioned, coolant. Are you losing any?

x2 on something on the exhaust system.

Years ago, I ran over a plastic bag as I drove down the highway. The cat was apparently hot enough to melt plastic, as the bag permanently (and I mean permanently) attached itself to the cat. From that day forth, until I changed out the cat, the vehicle smelled like burnt plastic (and not unlike burnt marshmellows )every time I drove it.

I am kinda tuned to the smell of anti-freeze steaming on a hot surface, but my wife and daughter say it smells like maple syrup. Does not take more than a tiny bit on a hot pipe to smell.

Where is smell coming from or where does the smell seem strongest, can you tell? Is your heater running when you smell it more?

fluids r fine, nothing on or spilled on exhaust or cats. truck is prety clean no mud in a while some creek crossing but nothing nasty mostly rocks, i can smell it in and out of the cab, i dot think its coming out of the exhaust and no i dont cook any thing on the manifolds or any thing like that. I dont see this as a big deal just gota keep marshmellows with me to feed the craving my truck forces on me PS: no cubscouts were injured in the making of this smell <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" />

Have you recently hosed the engine down with degreaser? Some of the cheaper spray on ones use kerosene which really stinks when heated.

Could also be paint if you recently painted your headers/exhaust or overspray near the exhaust.

Or maybe you used sugar soap to wash your rig? that smells kinda sweet when it burns on hot exhausts.
