Getting the Wheeling Fever
I have a 1986 Toyota with a 22r. After rebuilding the carb a while back, it tends to have a high idle. The obvious solution is to turn down the idle screw, however, the plug is still covering the idle screw since I saw no reason to mess with it. It should still be at the factory setting as far as I know.

It still starts and runs great. I am getting about the same mileage as before I did the rebuild. If the vehicle is warm, then it will occasionaly backfire when I shut it off, however I blame the high idle for that.

I checked the linkage and it does not seem to be binding.

I guess my question is what should I try before I take out the plug and mess with the factory set idle?

Body Damage is Cool
Read my carb faq in my signature. That screw with the plug is the idle mixture screw - don't mess with it. The idle speed screw is what you're looking for... read the FAQ for info on that.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Thanks for pointing that out. I was thinking of the mixture screw. I pulled my head out of my A$$ and gave the idle speed screw a 3/4 of a turn out and it fixed it right up. I did some errands in town today and made several stops. Each time there was no dieseling and best of all no backfire. Now I just have to find the guy that thought I was shooting at him the other day at the gas station and applogize. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

I think I have mentioned it before, but your website regarding the 22r carb is outstanding. When I rebuilt the carb, I read it thoroughly before starting.
