Oz engines then must have maintained the EGR system and single cat converter. The last year for an EGR system on North American Sportages was 1997. Starting in 1998 the EGR was eliminated and a 2nd cat converter, bolted directly on the exhaust manifold, was installed. I'll bet your Sportage has only one cat converter which would be located under the passenger side since you are right hand drive.

1998 Sportage - Gone.
2004 Honda Civic Coupe.
2007 Suzuki Grand Vitara - She got it.

Need a Spot
well hello all im back again and still my kia is in a rut. i took it to the dealer almost 2 weeks ago....and just like my mechanic that cant find the problem...they have done every test possible including changing the computer..has anyone else have this problem? both shops tell me they have never seen anything like this before, the dealer is even it the mist of trying to get a hold of kia corp, to see if there has been a problem like this before, the dealer also is suggesting taking it to a master tech. this problem is so bad that the dealer told me if the car has to leave their shop he is not charging me...now that says something

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Chech the cable for the throddle gas at valve body. My KIA when new would not get out of it own way and I checked that and low and behole it was way out of adjustment.
