I need to re-gear my 4runner- mostly for towing purposes.

Does anyone have 4.88's in their 4runner w/ 22re?

What are your opinions?

I tow about 2500 lbs. over a very steep grade and back regularly throughout the winter.

I have 4.88s w/ 33" tires. Works well, about equal to stock gearing.

I did, in my '88 pickup. Not much fun at altitude, where the motor is even more wimpy than usual. I've got 4.88's with 37's on the 4Runner, which is terrible, but I don't drive it on the street much.

I have 4.88s and 32s... but it's an automatic tranny.
The combo iss OK (just a slight hair over stock ratio), but I think I'f prefer 5.29s (again, b/c of the A/T) to get more use of the powerband on the highway and offroad.

Next step up is the 5.29's. If you are towing much the 5.29's will do you a better job. I run these w/ 35's and could not be happier.
