 Safety transmission locking key in ignition

Need a Spot

'01 Rodeo giving me problem with key not going into lock position. It stuck yesterday, then worked ok today when I got home from errand-so I don't think it's the relay. Thinking it must be a tranny safety function that keeps from shifting without braking first. Anyone have insight into this? thanks
