My '98 TJ (4 cyl. auto) started leaking tranny fluid about a week ago. I found the leak coming from one of the trans cooler lines going to the radiator. It's rusted right at the clip on the side of the oil pan (motor) that holds it in place. It looks like and expensive part to replace. Can the offending section be cut out and flex line be put in place? How much pressure/heat are these lines subjected to? I've seen alot of cars with short sections of hose used to connect the line to the radiator. I know it's butch, but will it work?

All I have ever seen had fairly low pressure. I have patched many of such lines over the years with a piece of rubber hose and a couple of small clamps... never had a failure of one of my patches.

Body Damage is Cool
You should be OK using rubber hose and clamps. To be on the safe side, use rubber hose that is designed for fuel injections systems -- they're designed to hold higher pressure.

If you want to be really slick, remove the metal tube and have a buddy weld the leak closed (it it's steel) or silver solder it (if's it's brass or copper). Make sure you wrap a piece of hose or inner tubing around the metal tubing where it is clamped to anything, in order to prevent an abraded leak in the future.

Thanks, guys. I am going to cut the tubing with a tubing cutter I borrowed from work rather than hack-saw it, to avoid getting metal shavings in the line. BTW, the tubing is steel.

OK, I did it. Had to repair both lines, in the same area. I'll keep and eye on it and see how it does. Thx again.
