Can the lower seal, of a Mk1 steering gear box, be replaced, without removing the box from the vehicle??? My cup overfloweth.

FSM says the cross shaft should be removed to replace the seal, although it sure looks like one could remove the cross shaft from the top after removing the pitman arm.
Can't get to the U packing behind the seal without first removing the shaft, though. And re-assembling it with the axial load of the column on the rack piston might be a little tricky.
I haven't tried it, but sure LOOKS possible. If you have to disconnect the steering shaft to get the x-shaft back in, you're only four mounting bolts from removing the entire box, anyway -- right? So, its worth a try.

Think there's a "u packing" and a seal in there, and it looks like you can do it in car IF you can pry the old ones out.
I just used some of that magic PS fluid with the leak stop in it, and mine quit leaking totally. Yellow can stuff.
