Getting the Wheeling Fever
For the love of GOD, I hope I'm doing this wrong, because if this is how it's designed, I want this engineer's head on a stick!!!
I'm trying to replace the water pump on this thing, and of course to do that, you have to remove the fan/clutch. To do that, you have to loosen the belt. To do that, you have to loosen the "Alternator Brace Bolt" (the one on the bottom that it pivots on}, the "Alternator Support Bolt"(the one on top that locks it in place), and one that's not even in the FSM, the adjusting bolt itself, that connects to the "Alternator Support Bolt".
SO I get the two uppers loose, and feel around the bottom front for that one. Hmmm....that's an odd shaped bolt head.
Sure enough, it seems as if you have to loosen/tighten the nut on the BACK SIDE of the alternator to get this thing loose!!!

IS THIS CORRECT?!?!?! Who in their right mind would look at this and say "Ah-so, don't forget, bolt comes off from back. We make it hard as possible for razy Americans!"

PLEASE give me a pointer here before I push this thing on the railroad tracks!!

Between this and that godforsaken heater hose deal on the back of the engine, I FEEL LIKE I'M TAKING CRAZY PILLS WHEN I WORK ON THIS THING SOMETIMES!!!!

That nut was easy to get to back in the 70s but then they just kept adding things around, above and below it.
Be glad you do not need a wrench on each end of it.

It's easier without a/c. And don't lose the "special nut" unless you own a super deep 10mm socket.

IIRC, I once got so pissed at that system that I reversed the bolt (replaced the "special bolt" with a hdw bolt) and put the nut on the front (a regular nut). Had to trim the bolt length to nut depth as installed. Oh, yeah, and there used to be about a 4 page section in the 85truckfsm about shimming the alternator mounting flange, which made no sense as there was that semi-slidey split bushing deslacker thing....

I swear before God, if someone could produce the idiots that designed this, so I could smack pudding out of them, I would give a week's salary!
OI mean seriously.....why in the f*** didn't they just put the nut on the FRONT like normal people? I have NEVER seen something like this, and I've worked on Fords, so I;ve seen some hokey crap.
I *finally* got the thing loose. I ended up putting a short 12mm socket on a short 3/8 drive extension, putting that on the nut on the backside, then squeezing my air ratchet down from the top, then attaching the air hose. At first, it was so tight that the air ratchet wouldn't loosen it, but it finally came loose. Then of course I ended up just taking the top bolt completely out because the adjuster wouldn't release far enough (or at least fast enough for me after getting pissed).
Then of course the coupling on my air hose came apart in half a dozen pieces, and I somehow lost the spring in it.
So then I figured the pulley/fan will come right off....oh no, not so fast! I had to use a flat screwdriver and a hammer to tap in between the clutch shaft and pulley and wiggle it off there, and *finally* it come off there.
Doesn't seem to be any play in the fan clutch, and it's nice and tight, but I'm going to price a new one, and also look at an electric fan.

The stupid part? The water pump is fine....nothing wrong with it at all. I just had to replace that freaking stupid hose, so I figured I would be nice and replace all the hoses, the thermostat, and the water pump.

So far this is going over like a pork chop at a barmitzfah.

Oh come now, it can't be worse than mounting a set of Micro DEs. The holes are not tapped and the fasteners provided twist off on first install. I have 15 pairs to install next week, once I have the kits finished. As long as I throw away the crap hardware supplied with them and tap the holes they are not so bad.

The early alternators (External fan and regulator)use brass shims under the rear ear.

Well I have to agree with you that not having the holes in the housing of the DE tapped is a PITA, but I've never had any of the hardware snap off.
On those lamps I usually run one of the bolts into all the holes before I get the lamp in position, so that it already has the threads tapped.

I had such a migraine after working on this thing last night, which is still with me this morning, that I think it might have induced a small stroke.
