So I'm getting a free 4.0 out of a 93 cherokee. What should I do with it? Maybe a head swap onto my 4.2? If you had this engine, what would you do. It's complete, minus the alternator and ps pump. Even has the harness and ecu. Any suggestions?

How much money and time do you wish to spend on that 15 year old engine? Do you need another engine in your ride? Of course it will be a lot of fun, but do you need the down time swapping will cost you?
I never change out stuff unless I NEED the swap.

take the crank and rods out of your 4.2 and stroke the 4.0, ofcourse its more complex then that, but you have everything you need to make a basic 4.5 stroker

I don't really NEED to do anything right now. My 4.2 runs fine and takes me where I need to go. My Jeep isn't my daily driver and down time really isn't much of an issue. I have a heated garage to work in so it can sit all winter if need be. I was thinking head swap because I can do if for pretty cheap, and it will get me a little more power. If I decide not to do anything with it I can always part it and sell it on eBay, it was free after all.

Body Damage is Cool
If you have the room, and you don't need to do a swap right now, why not just keep it as a spare?

I don't think I'd pull the head off of a complete, running 4.0.. even if the whole thing was free..
If I wanted something to do I'd opt for the stroker...all rebuilt and new.. That would be a project I'd like to undertake.

Oh, duh. I forgot to mention how I got it. The previous owner said it was "blown" and replaced his. Blown could mean the rods decided to make a window in the side of the block, or the crank felt like seeing the spark plug. Or it could mean the head gasket went bad. I have to tear into it to find out.
