Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hello all;

Spare me the innuendo about getting my zipper stuck at a difficult time, but as the weather begins to change here in the northwest, I found myself this morning having a difficult time zipping up my windows after sitting in the garage all summer. Any recommended lubricant (again, no jokes please) for the zippers to smooth this annual process?

A little beeswax might help.. Can you take the strain off of them and zip them a few times while loose? That might help get them acustomed to their job again..

Thanks Jim. I was speaking with a co-worker who uses "chapstick" on his boat and that seems to do the trick.

Dishwashing liquid is helpful. Beeswax is good for when you're ready to put the boat up for the season to keep it nice. If ya can't find any, PM me.

For the back one I find it easier if the bar at the bottom is pushed in first and the tabs hooked so it pulls the window tight before zipping.

Body Damage is Cool
In the past, I found the following to be very effective on zippers as they get cruddy or remain either opened or zipped for a long period of time:

Metal zippers: Vaseline

Plastic sippers: Silicone spray

After coating the zipper with the above, work the zipper up and down it's entire length a few times. Repeat in 2 weeks.

Try StarBrite Marine White Teflon for snaps and zippers.
Works great on baby strollers too -- the teflon repels water and dirt.

I remember having a bar of IVORY soap in a cj just for rubbing on the zippers.. It worked then so I betcha it would work today also.

I always used plain old candlewax. Just take a candle stub and rub it hard into the teeth. Liquids and sticky stuff like vasaline attract and hold grit, #1 enemy of soft cast zinc sliders.

If you ever need to replace the sliders on your soft top pick up some stainless steel ones from a marine upholtery supply shop, they'll never corrode again!

Take an old slider in with you if you go out shopping for new ones. The #8 and #9 coil sliders look almost identical and will not work if swapped.

Call me crazy, but Mopar has a zipper lube for Jeep soft tops. I have seen it on Ebay. I dunno if its worth the 6 or 7 bucks they want or if it works good as I have never used the product. If yer vehicle is under warranty, you might want to use this stuff until it runs out in case the zippers rip out or something. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" />

77 fiberglass CJ-7 304, Ground up Resto-mod Edelbrock Air Gap, Holley 1850, Headers and Flowmasters, Black Diamond suspension, BFG 33X9.50 on Outlaw I's. Hopefully on the road this year!
