Getting the Wheeling Fever
My 22re with fresh timing chain has an occasional miss at idle when it's out of gear. Under load, no perceptible miss and no problems. i.e. put in 1st and idle along at a walking pace, it seems fine. I've owned the truck for 10 years and I think the miss has been present ever since I can remember. A google search turns up all kinds of cries for help. I am wondering... has anyone whose 22re has a slight miss at idle ever cured it? If so, what was the fix? I'm probably not going to bother messing with mine, but I am curious to know if anyone has been able to solve the mystery of the missing 22re?

Check the TPS idle setting, if that is off, the ECU won't enter the smooth idle mode:

I know mine will idle a bit rough/erratic if that setting is off or if the dashopt is holding the throttle slightly open.

Mr Wiretender found the cure... He unplugged EVERY stinking sensor and plug underhood and cleaned them up with electrical contact cleaner, polishing them until they shined.

His Dolphin RV no longer has any sort of miss at idle. Someday I will try this with mine, but I have no time right now.

Mine has started the exact same thing, right after I had the head gasket replaced.
An intermittent 'put' out of the exhaust at hot idle, and a noticable change in idle rpm, but thats it.

Swapping in late model (1990? and later) upper plenum and throttle body sure cleaned up my idle issues. HUGE improvement in idle quality, and a noticeable boost throttle response and power.

The older style parts can probably be made to work well using tips provided here, but the newer style is a much improved design.

EDIT: I see in your sig that you have an 89 truck. Maybe you already have the later model plenum and throttle body, in which case my points are moot.

I had that miss before. Tried a new OEM O2 sensor. Helped for a while, but it came back. Finally got rid of it for good now. On mine, it turned out to be an exhaust leak. Air entering exhaust diluted the exhaust gas and gave O2 sensor bad reading.
Last stud on cylinder head alwayst tend to strip or loosen. On stock car, the joint between exhaust manifold and down pipe always loosen on a regular basis.
Both those problems are because there is no flex pipe in the stock Toyota exhaust. After a flex pipe, new exhaust studs and stage 8 permanent locking fasteners on the joint, the miss is gone for good now.

Yeah, I went through the same deal with my O2 sensor. I had a crack just below the flange so it was drawing in fresh air and throwing the O2 sensor reading off, in turn throwing off the fuel mixture. Even a small crack will do it with a narrowband sensor (pre-'92, I believe).
