Getting the Wheeling Fever
The factory stereo in my 01 4runner has been acting up. Sometimes it doesn't come on at all, sometimes it works, sumtimes the digital readout will show a display but nothing else works. This factory unit has several components. I was wondering if anyone had a similar problem with their factory stereo.

I've disconnected and removed the stereo and the small amp or whatever that is connected to it and reconnected and still nothing works. Is there any hope or should I keep looking at aftermarket equip.

You've got a TSB for the radio; see if it'll do anything for your troubleshooting process;

There's also FSM's sticky'd over in the Taco section you can use, if you're trying to use a Haynes or Chiltons.

Body Damage is Cool
I seem to recall a diagnostic mode for these stereos.

I *think* it goes like this:

With the radio off, but the key in the ACC position, hold down the 1 and 6 buttons, and press the CD button 3 (or 6?) times. It will beep a couple times and check itself out, and you'll be able to use the up and down rocker to scroll through any error codes.

What you can do with said codes I don't really know <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/zombie.gif" alt="" />

now that's the kind of down and dirty info I was looking for that this board has always provided. I'll give it a try and hope you weren't just making it up to mess with me. I don't even know if I want to fix it with all the new recievers out these days.

My FSM for 2001 Taco says CD button 3 times with the 1 and 6 buttons down (stereo off, ACC on -- as stated above).

There are four pages of trouble-shooting flow charts about which buttons to push to scroll thru all the component checks, and three full pages of codes and descriptions/countermeasure/parts to be inspected.

Check the FSM link to get the info. Good Luck.
