I had a cracked alternator mount which caused my serpentine belt to fall off instantly. I will be replacing the bracket/ mount on Thursday. Anyone have any advice for me? I'm going to be taking things apart soon, and would appreciate any advice. The belt is in perfect condition PS I got plenty of good advice when I was putting a rebuilt engine & upgrades in my 91 LS V6 trooper. I have since put an Amsoil dual oil filter in it (25,000 mile oil change interval)! http://www.amsoil.com/StoreFront/bf.aspx Thanks again

Did that a few years ago its fairly straight forward. What I did, and don't know if others may have, I fabricated a new bracket out of steel. That pot metal is crap. You also might want to check if the S brace that bolts to the block is cracked thats what did mine in. I reused the OEM brace but welded it then a piece of flat bar in the same shape in the curve area to reinforce it. I think my engine is the same as yours if not...um never mind. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/ignore.gif" alt="" />

Sorry no pics.. but I just used the old one as the template it wasn't that bad really. Another reason why I did it was the parts on troopers in my area are pretty picked over. If I had to do it again I would defiantly do the fab I believe it was well worth the effort. Its not bad getting it out but doing the fab I knew its one more thing that I know is fixed for good. That material for that bracket in my opinion was a horrible choice there is a tremendous amt of tension on that thing. Good luck.

I'm having a terrible time getting the pieces off. I suspect the last bolt to get the broken brace off is behind the tension spring assembly. It seems like there is a "torx" bolt located at the center of the tension spring assembly?

I "believe" that is a 55 Torx.
I am going out to the rig right now so I will check.
I couldn't get there without pulling my belt, but I am pretty sure that it is a t-55.

My 90 Trooper's aluminum a/c bracket broke this summer. I took it to a local place that does cylinder head repair, cost $20.00

If you have trouble locating another bracket or fixing your own, don't forget that a Chevy S-10 or GMC S-15 with 2.8 & serpentine belt would have the same bracket. Probably lots of them in the local wrecking yard.
Sears will have a nice Torx bit set and you should be able to pick up individual bits at your local auto parts store.
