NOISES IN DRIVE LINE

The wife reports noises in the drive line. First problem is the sounds of the typical u-joint failure , added with it a moderate shake in the front end...but she said not from the wheels ? Removed the front drive shaft ( forgot to mark the u joint placements - so what problem will this make). the joints fell tight BUT the front pinion gear HAS a clunk when turned. I also twisted the out put shaft of the transferr case (where the front drive shaft attatches) and clunk and what sounded like the chain slapping. Do these cars have known problems or did the previous owners never service the thing...any help at what layes ahead of me in cost , time and effort. I have bult several cars but have not been intothe four wheel drive stuff before. 1995 jeep cherokee automatic 6 cylinders 4x4 <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />
