im looking for a tool like zuk's clam shell that he uses to hold his bearing while he presses off the pinion. i know he had a machine shop make his but im looking for one that i could possibly buy that is made specificly for the toyota pinion bearing , i have a regular bearing/gear puller but it will destroy the bearing every time.im tempted to try to use a die grinder to modify the gear puller i have now.

I bought this exact model....OTC-1124...the pic does not do it justice.....it's a monster size bearing separator that seems to get the pinion bearings off for me. I think it will work for you. It has to be an extra large one like this one that had a good knife edge to get at the bearing.

The one at Harbor freight will not capture the bearing as well as this one.....this one has much better quality also. The harbor freight one looks tiny compared to the monster one I posted.

the one i looked at was alot smaller than this one. i may pick this one up and try it. its only a tad bit smaller than the one you posted and a hell of alot cheaper has anyone used this one?

I have successfully used the HF splitter on diffs and transmissions. IIRC I modified it a tad, but for $19 I can live with that.

This is a V6 pinion bearing.....there's a big difference in the weight and quality of this puller vs the HF one. I never thought I would spend $110 for one of these....but I needed it <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
