Getting the Wheeling Fever
I noticed tonight that the drivers side cv boot on my 93 V6 has torn and is letting grease escape. Does anyone have a good write-up on the replacement procedure? How long can I drive like this?

I did the same on my 91. It wasn't too difficult except when I had to remove the axle from the truck. Was a tight squeeze to drop it down and out. Might have been because of my lift kit. The FSM stickied in the forum has all the info you need to get it done. I wouldn't wait too long because any driving in the rain will wash out the grease and then the CV joint will eventually fail.

Thanks, I started the job tonight and will remove the axle tommorrow. I messed up the ball joints in the process. Thankfully I have replacements. Once I have the axle out, is it difficult to remove the inner end?

Honestly, I think it's easier to just replace the whole thing.... not too pricy...

While it's out, take a vice or C-clamp and press the studs out of the stub shafts sticking out of the differential, and replace them with some bolts and nuts. I know you don't like to think about this... but next time you have to do thsi job (sigh) it'll be a lot easier to get those CVs out.

I agree, just replace the entire unit. That's the route I went.

x3 60 bux each ,lifetime warranty, auto zone and x2 on the stud removal, it will keep you from having to seperate the upper ball joint from the uca to clear the studs when installing.

x4 on replacing the whole thing. With all the solid axle swaps, you can usually find used CV axles on bulletin boards for next to nothing.

If you decide not to go with replacing the whole axle, it really is not all that difficult to pull it apart and replace the grease and the rubber parts. I found the hard part was getting the axle out of the truck and you will have to do that either way. I could not get the axle out until I unbolted the lower ball joint. Also had a hard time getting the nuts on the inner flange undone. They were very tight the first time. Had to borrow my brother in law's good impact wrench and then use it without any extensions etc. Finally broke them loose.

I finished the job yesterday and everything worked out. It feels good knowing that the CV joints are water tight. Next up.....timing belt, 345000 kms
