Getting the Wheeling Fever
i found a 91 rodeo that the gears are shot in. what vehicles have a rear end that will interchange with this? the trucks? amigos? troopers? the guy said they are 4.30 gears. how do i know what is in the vehicles without tearing it apart at the junkyard to find one that will work?

thanks,
jeff

I assume you're looking for a complete axle replacement? since swapping only the gears requires a pretty high level of skill.

If he's got the 3.1GM engine, the rear axle is a GM corp 10-bolt (not to be confused with the Isuzu corp 10/12 bolt). Being a GM made axle, its actually pretty common and parts of readily available as GM used the same axle under many different vehicles.

if you don't know about the site www.car-parts.com, definitely check that out and you can source a replacement junkyard axle for relatively cheap.

PS... what's shot about the gears? did he grenade them? gears don't typically "wear out" if installed correctly... if there is indeed failure, its usually pretty catostraphic.

I've heard of a few of the GM 10-bolts that just seem to eat their spider and side gears. It causes great havoc and is almost impossible to correct without a full rebuild, which is much more $$ than that axle is worth. Finding another is a good route of action.

i'm unsure about what is wrong with the gears. he just said they are shot. on that www.car-parts.com website......... are those numbers that are listed for rear axles part of the vin number?

if so if i find out the vin of the rodeo will i be able to match it up with the vin of a truck or amigo or something so i can determine which one i need?

Body Damage is Cool
FYI - The Rodeo was the only Isuzu that used the GM 10-bolt.

A few people have swapped an Isuzu 12-bolt in place of the 10-bolt with relatively little in the way of mods.

If you are looking for a GM 10-bolt, look for Rodeos or other GM products. I'm not sure how the car-parts site works, sorry.
