o2(%) ns / 1.0 -
DILUTION >6.0/ 14.47 PASS

Low Speed test
HC (ppm) 220 / 280 [color:"red"]FAIL[/color]
CO(%) 1.20/ 0.07 PASS
CO2(%) ns / 13.4 -
o2(%) ns / 2.3 -
DILUTION >6.0/ 13.47 PASS

timing is set at 5* with jumper.

thanks in advance...

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I had 2 different trucks fail emmissions test. Both running smooth when took in. After spending a hundred dollars tuning the first truck that did not need a tuneup.I failed second test. So I had a catylitic converter put on and passed with flying colors. So second truck just had converter put on and it passed to.

The catylitic converter is just a year old.

I'm thinking advancing the timing and putting ethanol in the tank.

I have oversize valves and a RV cam from engbldr.

Thanks

put some magnets on your fuel line after your fuel filter, sounds silly but i did it and hooked a 5- gas analyzer to the tail pipe and it dropped HC a ton.

I know it sounds silly, but i really did it on a 5 gas analyzer at my tech school. using an OTC genysis scan tool and an adapter, with the tail pip sniffer and 2500 rpms with out magnets hc PPM were at 1300ish and after putting on magnets they would drop to 375-400. take them back off and they would go back up to 1300. idle HC PPM dropped also but not as much as the did at 2500rpm

Well I'll be going to Harbor Freight to get a fuel line magnet tomorrow.

In the mean time, I'll change the oil, which was way over due, clean out the pcv valve, check the valve adjustment, install new NGK spark plugs and if the dealer calls with my order, a new distributor cap/ rotor and wire set.

Honestly the truck is running awesome right now, I hope the magnets work...

After I replaced what I mentioned above I lowered the HC by only 30ppm so at 250ppm I FAILED again.
The 4runner is running better than it ever has I'm getting a sold 22mpg and it purrs with no miss, so I was sure it would pass.

Last night, when I got home I came across this thread,"How to Pass Smog" in there some where someone mentions how they get the HC lowered by retarding the timing and bumping up the idle just pass 1000rpm someone mentions to add a bottle of isoproply alcohol to the gas. It was good stuff to read, I wish I would have read it sooner

So now I will try to go to a non emissions testing county here in Texas and see if I could get a inspection sticker there. Then if I can't, I will try the alcohol, timing, idle adjustment I mentioned above. If all else fails a brand new cat to replace the 1yr old cat or maybe two cats ,meow...

...anyway comments or advise are welcome

I found retarding timing increased HC but decrease NOx (my HC nearly doubled going from 5* to 1*-2* BTDC but NOx went down by 30%). Advancing timing does the opposite. Adding ~10% alcohol can help with HC, adds more O2 to the mix and that can help burn more of the unburnt HC. I usually use plain old ethanol (aka shellac thinner at the hardware store).
