Hello all,

I am trading in my 99 Isuzu rodeo for a 92 Pajero, or so it seems at this point. Are there any major issues i should be aware of before I put more than a deposit on one. I know when I bought my rodeo the dealership failed to tell me there were major oil consumption issues. I love the thing and its a fantastic off roader but the fuel economy for my morning commute is terrible and the oil thing is starting to get to me, not to mention parts availabilty. I would love to hear about any issues like i have described before I buy the 2.5 diesel. By the way, how is the power??? I can't find torque/hp specs anywhere.

Fuel economy is great for the age and type of vehicle. Most of us seem to be getting in the high 20s (MPG) or just over 30. I can't remember seeing any issues with oil consumption in any threads here.

The big issues here all seem to have to do with age and maintenance. Timing belts, pulleys, glow plugs, CV boots, etc.

As for power, it's crap. 100hp. Barely gets out of it's own way. But I don't mind. Once up to speed, it moves down the highway just fine. My motorcycle does 0-60 in 2.5 seconds, so I can always get a speed fix if required!

Thanks for the welcome. Have been here for a while but hung out in the isuzu forums.

Good to hear no real issues with these vehs. I checked out the local Mitsubishi dealership in the north end in calgary and they seemed to think sourcing parts was not a problem, albeit slightly more expensive because they would be dealing direct with thier Japanese supplier. from others I have heard its best to go in with a part number and that way they don't know its not a north american veh. I was actually looking more towards an isuzu 2 door bighorn as I was concerned the 2.5 didn't have the power i was after. I frequently tow one or two quads with a load of camping gear in my Rodeo and really have no problems...I am guessing that may be a concern with the pajero?

C'mon Ed, you're selling the Paj short! We've got closer to 109 hp! But HP is not the claim to fame of this engine - its the torque: 170 lbs/ft at 2k rpm. For a small 4banger, this is not bad at all. I've towed my tent trailer all the way from Calgary to Van and back, through the mountains. It'll pull a few quads easily.

Platinum Mitsu should be able to look up parts for you now - I hooked em up with the Japanese spec version of their CAPS parts program . Paul is a good guy there on the counter...

I tow my tent trailer as well (about 3000lb). It is no sports car but it gets the job done, and cheap too.

Hehe. Sorry, it's just that my bike has more HP than my car and my truck.

Yeah, the Pajero is geared to compensate for the low HP, and has the torque to pull it off. It's way better on the highway than my 190hp Jeep 4.0L was with 3.07 gears.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
If this pajero is right hand drive then it has 105 hp and 240 Nm torque, if it is left hand drive [ which was made for Europe] then 99hp and same torque, there is no much difference between that two. That engine is little underpowered for long wheel base, but 5.3 transfer gear and more than normal torque compensate it.

the only reason mine is so slow is because I am constantly grabbing gears....if mine was an auto it would pick up pretty quickly. for the engine being as small as it is, I am VERY impressed.

It is really a great truck!

Check for leaking wherever possible.
I faced to change fuel pump gasket set.
Another weak place is power windows and sunroof.
Check undercarriage for rust.

As for me not enough power for first gear, especially to start from traffic lights, but 3-4 gear you are flying! And 5-th gear in the city! Great economy!

I felt more power, and it was really noticeable after ever K&N air filter installation and oil change for Shell Rotella 10W40 (semi synthetic).

Good Luck,

Phil or anyone,
Why is the 2.5 so sluggish and the 2.3 a ball of fire?
My 2.3TD would blow the doors off a 4.0 Ford pickup.
