Ok, assuming it's either the slave or master cylinder. Is it a fairly easy thing to do on your own? Or would you recommend taking it somewhere? Cost is a big factor for me considering I am a poor college student.

Not too hard to change. You need some flare wrenches for the hyd. lines and some way to bleed the lines afterwards. If I remember correctly, mine was the slave cylinder. There was no external leak, it was the piston seal inside the slave letting fluid leak from the high to low pressure side.

With it in this position I can throttle the engine and the truck will continue to speed up, eventually something happens and the clutch will disengage indicated by the engine revving as if in idle.

I was going to vote for either bad master or slave or air in the line or leak,
until I read this part. I can't figure out how you could hold the peddle down then suddenly have it work (unless maybe the slave moved a little bit, then the clutch started slipping). Letss hope that replacing the hydraulics fixes it for you.

Bad Master.

Replace the slave too or a new Master will kill it very soon.

Slaves leak where you can see it.

Masters leak inside the cab and usually under the carpet where you cant.

Air and/or other contaminates is causing the weirdness.

Do it youself, save your book and pizza money...oh and

If I may offer a little driving instruction...Stop shadowing and riding the cluth pedal unless you're a rally driver.

Definitely an internal master cylinder leak, if you're not losing fluid, with the fluid leaking from one side of the internal cup to the other. Slave cylinders don't have internal leaks. They either work, or they leak onto the ground. New clutch master cylinders aren't expensive.

Sorry to disagree, but the other "side of the internal cup" is just a non pressurized rubber boot that eventually dumps fluid on the inside of the firewall. Leaks show up somewhere, unless they connect to the intake vacuum....

There are two cups inside the clutch master. When the outer one leaks, you get fluid inside the cab. When the inner one [at the bottom of the piston] leaks, fluid bypasses internally and you get the sinking pedal syndrome or intermittent clutch operation with no external leaks.
