Likely a fair bit of work. This guy spent about 25 hours installing one in a 2nd gen:

You would have to deal with any differences in sheet metal shape and probably need custom fabrication for some of it where the 2nd gen parts don't fit.

ive toyed with the idea before, to run it without tearing your sheetmetal, you'd definatly have to run a piece of bar stock behind the tail light for support.


i would try to integrate it into a bumper instead.

+1 on the bumper integration. I would not risk the sheetmetal on a first gen.

With a bumper integration you retain the project goal of justifying a MIG purchase, too! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" /> Far more important than actually having the spare mount, doncha know...
