The other day I noticed a small puddle (probably about 1 teaspoon) of gear oil under the transfer case. Thought, uh-oh, what's leaking now? Crawled underneath and noticed it had leaked around the fill plug and also from the top of the front of the transfer case. I could not see any seal where the leak might be coming from. Does the transfer case have a vent somewhere? Drove it for the next several days and no more leak (knock on wood). Not sure what happened. I had a Jeep that once or twice a year the transfer case would "burp" a little gear lube- never could figure out why. Anyway, any ideas? Thanks, Jim Tulsa '89 two door v-6 auto

The tcase vent is in the tcase shifter/top cover plate. Little rubber mushroom. That's upper frontish. Been at any steep angles lately? Fill plug tight? If I 'member right, most of the sump tcase lube is in the chain housing, and the drain is in the bottom of the driven sprocket (output shaft case. Hard to get a leakable amount of lube to the top front of the case. The upper gears barely run in lube at all to keep the shaft drag low. Could the leak be at the tcase rear driveshaft front yoke seal. and be running "downhill" down the taper of the rear output shaft housing to the chain case and down it to the drip point? You crawl under and look. I'm too old and stiff right now.

Thanks for the tips. I figured there had to be a vent somewhere. I was hoping the leak was a one time occurence. I cleaned off the lube around the fill hole and around the front/top of the transfer case. Drove around town for a few days and didn't seem to leak anymore. However, after some highway driving the leak is back. Could the vent be partially clogged and the additional heat from highway driving is forcing it to leak? Don't understand how it is leaking from the fill plug. The highway driving is probably "slinging" the lube around a lot more but I don't see where the leak is coming from any gaskets. Any more thoughts? Thanks for your help. Jim Tulsa '89 two door v6 auto

I'd tighten the shifter plate and check the inner boots. Easiest from inside (remove consoles and outer boot from floor). No good way...
