At least that is how I think one spells it.
Rust! I was just out sitting in the garage staring at our 95 4Runner. It has just around 200K Kil so about 125K miles on it. Mechanically it is still reasonable but the demon rust has a hold of it. There are holes through the rear quarter panels over each wheel as well as down under the side parts to the back bumper. There are holes in the top edge of the tailgate. There are blisters on the front fenders above the trim strip. I have been working on it a bit - cut some of the rust out of the driver's side rear wheel arch and pop riveted in some galvanized sheet metal. Plan is to put cloth and resin over that to seal it as best I can and then some bondo to smooth things out.
However, I sit there looking at it and thinking it is a butcher job. I hate to do junk repairs but I don't know if the truck is worth spending any big money on at the autobody shops. They do tend to charge an arm and a leg. I figure this thing is worth a maximum of $3 to $5K on a good day and don't want to spend $3 to $5K having it fixed. I don't think that is going to pay me back in the long run. I'd like to get the patch panels and have them welded in properly but I have been down this road before with other vehicles and sooner or later you have to move on anyway. The rust always comes back.
What are the rest of you folks in the rust belt areas doing?

America's first fourwheel drive was built in Mankato, MN by Ernest Rosenburger in 1908 who founded Four-Traction Auto Co. on Hickory Street. The company though successful closed in 1913.

If the rust is that bad enough to have eaten through the sheetmetal, you should probably cut your losses now. Sell the truck for what you can and purchase a relatively rust free newer Runner. With the new runner I would use a quality rust stopping undercoating, something like POR15, or one of the higher quality D-I-Y bed coatings, or a pay to have Line-X sprayed on it. Line-X is going to be more expensive the the D-I-Y job, but it should be a one time deal.
More than tread lightly. Leave it like you were never there, nor anyone else. '90 X-cab 4.88's 33 BFG AT's, rr ARB, Headers, Ignition upgrade, cold air induction. '91 X-cab 5.29's 315's BFG MT's, rr ARB, custom bumper and flatbed
