Getting the Wheeling Fever
Ok I just finished SAS my truck and doing a flat bed. I dropped the tank to weld up the flat bed. I put the tank back in, and I *think* I have all the fuel lines hooked back up right.

Here is my problem. I take off and drive fine for a few seconds, then the truck acts like it runs out of gas. It bucks bogs then dies. It will refire. It will idle all day long. It drives fine if you barly push the gas.

What I have tried

New fuel pump
New fuel filter
Checked pickup screen
Blew out fuel lines
Out new hoes clamps at line connections

I have recently rebuilt the carb, and when I did I set the fuel level low in the sight glass. I can see fuel in there when its running. The only thing I can come up with is that the needle valve isnt letting fuel into the bowl fast enough and when I get up to speed the bowl runs out.

I am getting ready to tear into the carb unless someone has another idea. Thanks I really want to try out my freshly SAS'ed truck.

Here's a diagram for the mid 80s fuel lines off the tank.

BTW, the diagram Chompy posted is available in the FSM's sticky'd here. Follow the instructions for the 1985 manual; it's a rather large document.

OK , Here's an idea for you. Not sure if this is the case but on some of the 22re's , the two rubber lines on the fuel tank (one output, one return) are different. You know the ones that attach to the hard lines?

Anyway , on my 86' runner 22re one of the lines has a restrictor / filter/ or maybe a one way valve? in it . It's tiny and hardly noticeable and the only reason I found it was I was cleaning them out and blew air thru them to clean them . The problem is I can't remember which side (output / return ) it goes on or what its real purpose is . But IF it's in there Toyota had a reason and IF it's in the wrong place it may cause a problem . My point is , is that the side it's on I'm sure is important as could be the direction of orientation(flow)

I've never removed the ones off my carbed truck so I can't say for sure if they'd be on yours. I do remember when I was restoring the 86' , they the parts guys looked at me crosseyed when I told them one of the lines had some sort of valve in it. It didn't show up on there parts schematic so we ordered both hoses and sure enough one of them had the valve in it

I'd like to hear what others think of that particular hose and what it does????

On big acrobat files I find it better to right click the link and choose 'save as...' than to left click it. I have a recent computer and have freezing problems too when I left click them...

well whatever was causing the problem stoped. I really wanted to figure out what was causing the problem, so I could fix it and not have to worry about it happening far from home. Maybe it was water in the gas? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

>>>*Any time an engine will idle or run with part throttle but stalls at any speed or distance you are correct to suspect fuel.

My guess would be something in the tank partially blocking the pickup, especially since it solved itself.

That happened to me with an old Dodge once. I changed the fuel tank, put in a used one. It had a small amount of fuel in it, in the shuffle something got knocked loose. I worked on that one for a few days, finally took the tank back out. That one had an inspection plate which I took off, I retrieved some leaves covering the pickup screen.

And yep, could have just been some water, too....*EB

Well the problem is not gone. At times its so bad the truck wont even get out of its own way.

So far I have tried new:
plugs
wires
fuel pump
fuel pickup
new tank (old one was rusted)
new fuel filter
adjust float level
blew threw all fuel lines
cleaned the carb
checked compression (all were fine)

I am just at the point where I dont know where to look anymore. On top of that my daily driver just lost the clutch, 300 miles away so its staying there till around xmas when I can get back up there and fix it.

I NEED this truck to run please help I am beyond frustration right now.
