My neighbor just bought a 2006 Sienna used from an estate. It didn't have the keyless remote (seller couldn't find it) so he went to the stealership to get another one. He was quoted around $300 to get another one and have it programed! Is this item available cheaper? Can the programming be done by someone other than a factory-authorized tech? I've worked on various Toyotas all my life and am willing to tackle this if no special equipment is required.
Your thoughts?

Not sure on Toyota's, but, with many vehicles, if a working remote isn't available to program a new one off of, then the dealer is the only one that can do it. $300, though, sounds like a ripoff. At a Lincoln Mercury dealership I worked at, it 1/2 hr labor plus the remote. In those cases, though, the remotes were seperate from the key. If the remote is integral to the key and/or if the key is "laser cut" similar to one of these ![[Linked Image]](http://www.motortrader.com.my/NUS/articles/0/article_197/18.jpg) then that can jack the price up significantly. Older Toyotas cost you $75 plus $50 for the 2 minute labor...im guessing there is a module under the seat with a button on it that helps in the programming process...

It would be the cost of the transponder key plus a half hour of labor. So, call around dealers and ask how much for the transponder, and that should tell you if your getting ripped off or not. But I don't think you are....transponder keys are expensive. Programming just takes a few minutes with the code reader device they have...basically they hook up the reader, set it to program the key, turn the key like 6 times before a certain time, and its programmed.

www.techinfo.toyota.com Get the TSB instructions for programming the xponder. $10, plus all the FSM they want in 24 hours to download. Get the key and transponder off fleabay. Did it for my 4Runner. BTW, you may or may not have that module under the seat; depends on which alarm system is installed. This will affect which TSB you use for the RS3000(?) system. My plain jane '99 has a factory installed alarm, no module.
