Loosen, but leave the nuts on; dem der cones aren't cheap, and you don't want to lose them. I lay the drift on the hub body and whack it. Loosen, but leave the nuts on; dem der cones aren't cheap, and you don't want to lose them. This is the way to go for sure. Don't even bother hitting the studs. Hit the hub itself while the nut it stiill on a few threads. Spin the hub around and hit it all on all sides. The cones will pop out. Heck, I don't even use a brass drift to hit the hub. Just whack away. When you put them back in, coat them with some anti-seize or just plain grease to make them easier to remove next time.

I back off the nuts till they are flush with the end of the studs. Brass drift against the stud/nut, small sledge, couple of wacks, and off they fly (caught by the nut) - usually. If not, wack it harder. I tried wacking on the hub body before I got the drift. Didn't work for me. Maybe I did not wack hard enough, but I bruised the hub so that was enough to make stop and try something else. I also tried the small wedge in the crack method, that worked on some of them. I've never had the brass drift on stud method fail for me - I think that is what the Toyota manual recommends. I carry a brass drift and small sledge in my truck just in case.
Everybody has their favorite method to remove those cone washers. Yes they can be a pain, but the alternative is worse (nuts back off, studs shear)

well i might start this weekend if i have a chance. these things need to be greased up bad. i can hear the one on the right squealing a bit. oh well i guess thats what i get with 390,000 <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shiner.gif" alt="" />

Getting those cone things off is a pain but repacking the bearing is a piece of cake. Like the others posted, latex gloves, big plop of grease in your palm and smack the bearing edge into it repeatedly until you see it sploogh out the top. I just did it today and it was the least of my concerns. When you put the cones back in, place the gap outward so you can get a punch on the edge next time. Also, a little SeaFoam half an hour before you plan on removing them does wonders.
