I've been swapping a motor from an 86 td into an 88 trooper. I'm almost done, but discovered the radiator had both the side brackets loose from the lower tank because of a good amount of rust. Thought no problem, just have the radiator shop disassemble, sandblast and resolder the thing. The guy soldered it back up, but kept finding small leaks in the core and can't get it to hold pressure. I asked about a re-core and he checked out prices. Said that with the increasing prices of copper a recore job for this rad. would be about $500. Not sure of the price breakdown, but he said the new core was more than half of that cost. Is this reasonable? anyone know of a source for replacement cores or radiators for the turbo troopers? HELP!
Just last year I bought a new rad. for the 88 gas trooper and it was a fairly reasonable $185.

Thanks for the advise

Thanks for the links. I tried radiator.com and will hear back later. radiatorbarn.com however doesn't differentiate between the gas & diesel motors and only comes up w/ a two row rad. This seems very common with online parts places.

No good on either of those places - they have incorrect info in the databases.
I'm about to go with a universal aluminium radiator from jegs.com, part # 555-52006

I've already had the only junkyard in the state that claimed to have a diesel rad. ship it to me to find that it's a gasser rad.

Anyone have experience with these jegs radiators?. Looks like it will fit well other than needing to make up some hoses with reducers at the ends.

IF YOU CAN GET A LITTLE CREATIVE THE RAD FORM A 93-97 V6 RODEO WILL FIT WITH OUT TOO MUCH PROBLEM AND YOU CNA USE THE RODEO FAN SHROUD, YOU WILL HAVE TO MAKE BOTTOM MOUNTS AS THE RODEO SITS IN A ROUND SOCKET, AND USE A CLAMP AT THE TOP, THOSE JEGS RAD ARE GREAT , BUT BE SURE AND GET THE LARGEST ONE YOU CAN OR THE ENG WILL RUN HOT, , THEY ARE JUST MARGINAL , WHEN THAT TURBO STARTS MAKING BOOST IT STARTS MAKING A LOT OF HEAT , THE RODEO HAS THE HOSES IN THE RIGHT SPOT ALLSO, BUT EVEN ON THOSE YOU NEED THE WIDE CORE , V6 A.C AND YOU SHOULD BE OK, SAME WITH THE JEGS THE LARGER THE BETTER JERRY

Thanks Jerry. I think I'd read similar info from you at isuzupup.com, but I thought there might be a different solution for the diesel troopers.
I looked at a couple of rodeo replacement radiators (visteon #9145) and it seems like they are using the same core (1.25" thick) as in the gasser trooper radiators. Basically, the inlet & outlet look in the right places, but there are less rows of tubes, and the one I looked at had 1.5" hose connections. The two rows of aluminum tubes will have more surface area than the rodeo rad. since the frontal area of the cores is almost the same (rodeo rad: 24" x 16" = 384sq.in., jegs aluminum: 20" x 19" = 380sq.in.) but the jegs rad. is thicker (2.25"). I think I'll try the aluminium rad.
When you've fit them in do you open up any of the front sheetmetal to fit in a larger than stock unit?

Thanks

HAVE NOT OPENED THE RAD OPENING UP ,AS THESE WERE ON PICKUPS AND THEY FIT PRETTY GOOD, I DID THREE OF THEM AT ONE TIME FOR A ROCK QUARRY DSL. BUT ON THE TROOPER IF YOU CAN GET A A THICKER RAD , THERE IS QUITE A BIT OF ROOM , TAKE A LOOK AT THE FLANGE WHERE THE RADIATOR MOUNTS , NOW ON EACH SIDE OF THE CORE SUPPORT, IF YOU WILL DRAW A LINE STRAIGHT UP FROM THE INSIDE EDGE OF THE OPENING ALL THE WAY UP AND OVER THE TOP OF THE CORE SUPPORT, THEN GO ALL THE WAY ACROSS JUST BEHIND THE HOOD LATCH OPENING , NOW YOU CAN DROP A MUCH LARGER RADIATOR INTO THE SAME SPOT , BY MOVING AND ADDING 4 SMALL SPACERS TO THAT AREA WHERE THE BOLTS GO THRU THAT HOLD THE STOCK RAD IN PLACE, YOU CAN GET A 3 ROW RAD IN THERE EASY, AND IT IS MOVED FORWARD QUITE A BIT AND STILL WILL NOT HIT THE CONDENSER, I SET UP ONE LIKE THIS USING THE DSL TURBO RAD WITH A 4.3 ENG AND IT LOOKED LIKE IT WAS MADE THAT WAY FROM THE FACTORY ,AS THE RAD WAS MOUNTED ON THE STOCK PANEL A ND THE STOCK SHROUD FIT PERFECT,, ALL SO THE STOCK RODEO RAD EVEN THOUGH IT IS ONLY ONE CORE WIDE THE WATER FLUE IN IT IS A VERY WIDE FLUE ABOUT 1 1/2 IN AT LEAST , BUT I IS JUST ONE, THAT SEEMS TO BE THE WAY A LOT OF NEW DESIGN RAD,S ARE BEING BUILT INSTEAD OF THE MULTIPLE ROWS , WHAT I HAVE GATHERED IS THEY SEEM TO RADIATE MORE THAN THE MULTI ROW,S JERRY

I wonder if a Gen I Montero V6 radiator would fit? I've thought about using the spare I have in my Trooper if I ever get it running. The V6 radiator is much much larger than the radiator for my 2.3 yet it looks like it might fit. I would have to do some testing to try it.

There are afordable, quality aftermarket radiators for the V6. Maybe that would be another option for you?

Give these guys a look to see if they have what you need; a few of the Yota guys have had good luck doing business with them.

Thanks for the advice all, in the end I bit the bullet and had the original rad. recored. I did look at fitting one of the jegs al. radiators in, and it would have required a good amount of time I didn't have. The radiator needs to be modified - no way around it. The lower right inlet is aimed straight into the timing belt cover. I don't think that even by modifying the front metal as mentioned by jerry above that you could get enough clearance to fit an elbow in there. it wouldn't be too expensive, but it would have cost me about a week of time waiting to get it to and from the welder.
