Getting the Wheeling Fever
Got a chance to buy some brand new 35" X 12.5" tires on some wicked 15" rims. I wanted to lift my trooper this winter but now I want to know how much it will have to be lifted to fit these boots? Right now it's stock 1991 Trooper. Guy wants $800 for 5 of these tires, brand new BFG Mud. So if you guys could help me out with this as I would have to pick them up tonight, he is wanting $1100 for them but said if I come tonight he'll let me take all 5 for $800.

PEACE OUT!

It will depend on the width of the tires, the rim back spacing and how much fender trimming/BFH you plan on doing!

Well I just said screw it and went to pick them up. I'm hoping that I'll be able to just put a 3" body lift on for now and wait to lift the suspension in the spring. Tomorrow I'll try and throw these on and see if I can get away with just a body lift for now. $800, brand new... couldn't go wrong. Has anyone run these tires with just a body lift? Time to start looking for a 3.4l

Howdy,

I don't know for sure, but I think 35" will require a lot of trimming or BFH'ing. You will need AT LEAST the body lift, and more than likely the SL as well.

you should have no trouble with fitting them with a 3" BL. you may need to trim the fenders a little bit and perhaps pound in the inner wheelwell/firewall to prevent rubbing there. may contact frame at full steering lock depending on wheel backspacing.

I ran 35's with no lift (all trimming and pounding) for a good year or so. As long as you are in a fairly flat area you shouldn't have trouble getting going. and if you aren't just forget about fifth gear. Be easy on it offroad if you are bound up or struggling for traction (bouncing) because it's much easier to grenade the cv's with 35's.

I'm going to order a 3" body lift from independent4x this week before I have to go back to work. Who's done this to a first gen trooper? What else should I order with it? What are some snags to be prepared for?

Actually, the body lift is pretty simple to do. I can't really think of anything that gave me problems when I did mine, except for maybe some old bolts that had rusted in place. It was actually one of the easiest things I did to the Storm Trooper.

Start spraying the body bolts with a penetrating lube. A few applications for a few weeks before you start the project can help a lot.

Thanks, my work schedule starts to get busy again tomorrow for a couple weeks so I wont be lifting until mid November at the earliest. I just put the tires on now to see how a 3" would work and I think it will give me what I need. Will lose some steering but I think a little bit of trimming and banging could help with that, wont know until it's done I guess. So if you guys can think of anything else that would most likely give me grief during this body lift let me know, I want it to go as smooth as possible.
