Need a Spot
Hey all first timer here. I've got a problem with my CJ, running a AMC 360 with a f-150 4 speed tranny. spring over, 5 inch body lift, 6 inch lft kit, running 36's. The dang thing kept throwing out of 3rd gear. I need some help here. anyone know a good tranny specialist in Connecticut? Fairfield county area (Near New York). Hope you all can help.

Dave

What transmission? I have a 79 F150 4x4 with 35ö Swampers, with the NP 435, and it was doing the exact same thing about 7 years ago now, it drove smooth is first, second and forth, but third it would shake the shifter and pop out with a pretty decent metal Bang. I ended up pulling the trans and found the output Ball bearing for the trans to be completely shot (1/4" of axial play, and 3/8" of radial play). I think I spent about 150.00 bucks for a bearing and gasket kit for the transmission, while I was in there, I replaced the plastic/ Teflon guide feet on the shift forks too. The rebuild wasnÆt that bad with standard tools, the worst part inside the trans itself, was dealing with the needle bearings on the counter shaft, and getting one bearing out of a bolted on aluminum piece, I cant remember what shaft this aluminum bearing holder was for, but the local trans shop got it out for me. What transfer case do you have?

I too am in CT, but up north now, but when I rebuilt the trans, I in Idaho, so I cant help you with a good trans shop.

Body Damage is Cool
It very well may be the ternsmission itself, but before I pulled it, I would check the lever and linkage. With that much body lift, it's not unusual for the shift lever to be slightly hitting the edge of the hole in the floorboard, at least when the vehicle shakes a little, causing it to pop out of gear.

I would take off the rubber boot and such, so that you can see the clearance between the shift lever and the edge of the hole. Then drive it like that for a little while, and see if the lever is coming close to the edge of the hole.

BTW, why do you have 11 inches of total lift just to run 36" tires? I have a total of 6-1/2" of lift for 35" tires, and I'd probably only need another 1/2" to be able to run 36" tires.

I was kinda wondering about all that lift too...Not just the 11" but SOA as well??? Something must have been mis-stated in the original post is what I was thinking.

I missed the bit about the SOA. That woud add about another 5",.for a total of 16" of lift, and dthen add another 4" of height for a tire that is about 8" taller than stock. So the gunwales are 20 higher than OEM.

Where's my ladder? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />
